Venturing into AR with Wallace & Gromit's immersive storytelling app

Wallace & Gromit's new immersive storytelling app "The Big Fix Up" is a narrative-driven experience where players have the opportunity to fix up the city of Bristol.

The app take the used through an AR gameplay with CG animations and even extended reality (XR) portals and comic strips.

The story follows the well known Wallace & Gromit through a new business venture called Spick & Spanners, being contracted to "fix up" Bristol in which players take on the roles on new employees at the company.

The studio behind the beloved characters, Aardman Animations is based in Bristol hence why the city was chosen for the new app.

The app features no in-app ads and its main section is not monetised and is available to download in the UK, US and Canada on iOS and Google Play.

For the launch of the app they partnered with Snapchat and created a "Wallace" filter that was released on 18th January and is available in the UK, US and Canada.

"The big fix up" is backed by funding from the Government's UK Research & Innovation sector, and venture lead at Potato and co-founder of Fictioneers, Scott Ewings said about the app:

"We are really excited to launch 'The big fix up', the first release from our new Fictioneers studio. We believe it's a first-of-its-kind experience, part of our vision to harness multiple technologies, media types and formats to tell enhanced, collaborative and immersive stories in real-time.

"To do this, we have developed a software platform, the MUST Platform, to enable creative teams to design real-time stories, timelines and activities and then integrate a variety of transmedia to support those stories. With 'The big fix up', we have created a new, rich and multi-layered experience, where, for the first time ever, you can become part of Wallace & Gromit's story. This will be the first of many releases using the Fictioneers platform."
